Proposed Revisions to Illinois Social Science Standards

The Illinois State Board of Education recently released proposed revisions to the Illinois Social Science standards in grade K-12. The changes were created by a committee of educators representing the diversity of the Land of Lincoln under the leadership of Elizabeth Hiler, Principle Consultant of Social Science and Erica Thieman, Director Of K-12 Curriculum and Instruction at the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE).

While Illinois Civics Hub (ICH) did not participate in these standards revisions, the ICH is hosting a two feedback sessions for educators to discuss the revisions and take informed action to create the best document possible before public comment ends on May 24th, 2021. Participants will complete a guided review of the proposed revisions pre-webinar and then work in affinity groups to discuss, reflect and provide comments to ISBE.

Illinois Civics Hub has created a google document for each grade band, placing the current standards and proposed revisions side by side to help your exploration of the revisions. 
Professional development credit will be available through the DuPage ROE for preparing for and attending the event. The meetings will be held via zoom.

For those who would independently like to provide public comment on the proposed revisions, comments or feedback must be submitted via email to rules@isbe.net no later than May 24th, 2021.

Resources to Respond to Tragedy and Violence

Teachers send messages to students about power, justice, and representation by the content we select, the way we engage student voice, the norms we employ, and the stories included in our classroom. We have a responsibility to prioritize our students’ lived experiences, putting Maslow before Bloom , to inform the essential questions we address in our curriculum. When violence or tragedy occurs, classrooms provide a safe venue for students to process, ask questions and be given context to understand current events as they happen. Strengthening School Climate through Inclusion
